THE Wind Series 2008

Bronze, Bronze resin, Stainless steel, Purple Slate, Glass, Concrete

Edition: 8

The Wind Series - Carefree originates from a Chinese character: 風 wind /freedom.

It comprises 6 sculpture works:

  • Freedom - Wind 1 自由

  • Free - Wind 2 自在

  • Flow as Wind; Wind As Sword - Wind 3 柔也如風, 劍也如風

  • Leafy Swan - Wind 4 草葉鵝

  • Swan on Water - Wind 5. 水上行

  • Wind 6 installation

The first two are based on the standard and cursive style of calligraphy; it then transforms into the extreme cursive, abstract form of the 3rd sculpture, with a new life which has different facets as depicted in the 4th and 5th sculptures.

The Wind Series - Carefree is a series of first known sculptures on Chinese Calligraphy: they bring age-old 2D graphic Chinese Calligraphy into 3D interspatial form in a groundbreaking fashion, deeply influenced by my family upbringing.

They illustrate not only calligraphy techniques, styles, energy flow, but also the philosophy inherent in it. And it is through the physical transformation of lines and shapes, flows of energy communicate and break the language barrier which is my sincere aspiration, in order to share the richness Chinese Calligraphy has to offer. And the influence has indeed opened a window, adding a new language to sculpture.

The choice of bronze as the medium and purple slate as the base, signify royalty as well as hoping it will stand the test of time, which is only fitting as a world cultural heritage.
