EQUILIBRIUM?

RHODODENDRON WOOD, STAINLESS STEEL, GRANITE

53 x 24 x 68 cm

Will shifting perspective of who, what, & where, change the viewer’s answer of “equilibrium?”

360 degrees x2 rotation view

The piece was inspired by the shape of the wood, which suggested the Chinese characters for fire and water. These two forces can be seen as contradictory, but also as in a delicate balance - water could extinguish fire, but could also be heated and purified by fire. Equilibrium? can initially be seen as off balance, but if one observes from the perspective of the space, it is supported by all the forces involved. And with 360 degree rotation in the state of equilibrium, one can see the constant changes of perspective and supporting forces involved. Invisible flow of the forces through and around the sculpture is complemented by the visible interaction, an ever-changing of the outlook of the work.

What are our views of the world, of life? What are “you” seeing?

The rhododendron wood is from the grounds around the house.
